There is just over one month to go before I need to file the forms, and signed petitions, with the Illinois State Election Board. In preparing for that day, I find that roughly 80% of the hundreds of people I have met, throughout the district, believe that electing Independents or third party candidates to Congress is very important and could have a major positive impact on our democracy. Unfortunately, many of those same people believe it is not likely to happen because of the power of the major parties and their backers.
Many Americans seem to have forgotten that as Lincoln stated, this government is "By the People, of the People and for the People". That did not mean: By the people who have accumulated several billion dollars in assets and choose someone to put into office, or Of the people who control the two party system and work to place hurdles in the path of Independent candidates (for example, 5,000 nominating signatures for Independents versus 400 for the "Major" party candidates), nor is it only For those who lobby for their own self interests which may or may not benefit the long term health of America.
If "We the People" are going to change the future we have to change what we believe is possible today. We have to embrace the power that is given to the People in our democracy and know that we are not helpless observers. There were no Democrats or Republicans in 1776. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were all "independents".
The Founders were willing to give up everything, including their lives, to create the foundation for America, the greatest country in the world. Let us be willing to give up our misconceptions about what is and is not possible and contribute some time, energy, and our votes, to hold on to it.
